Adventure

Challenge for Change exists to raise awareness of extreme poverty and to change the lives of those who currently live within these dehumanising conditions. We like seeing our event participants suffer for such a worthwhile cause. Hence our motto, 'Challenging events, changing lives.'

Since 2008 such events have raised over $700,000 and seen over 180 students supported on an ongoing basis who could not otherwise afford formal schooling. They have been held in Australia, Africa and New Zealand and have engaged both the donor community (mostly in challenging cycling or walking events) and students from EW in a Surf Challenge!

What could be better than cycling the North or South Islands of NZ? Cycling both of course! In 2019 we are heading back to New Zealand – not for a holiday – but to see how we can make a difference in changing the lives of those less fortunate then ourselves. For those that have been before you know that NZ is a spectacular place to ride a bike. For those who are thinking of coming along for the first time, what better way to stretch yourself, for someone else, a Challenging Event that is Changing Lives. We think that this could be one of our best ever events!

The Event

Flying into Auckland on Saturday 30th November, we will start heading south towards Wellington On Sunday 1st December, finishing up on December 8th at Christchurch. With 7 cycling days over 8 days, this will be a challenge and stretch everyone, but will be worth it. There are opportunities for both cyclists and support crew, so if you'd like to support the work of Eagles Wings we have a role for you!

  • Event dates - departure Saturday November 30th to Monday 9th December, with 7 cycling days
  • Event itinerary – Arrive in Auckland November 30th, Auckland to Christchurch December 1st to 8th, inclusive of a rest / travel day, depart Christchurch December 9th. (more route details to come)
  • Accommodation - we will be staying in a mixture of cabin and youth hostel style venues. More details will be provided following registration, but that means you will need to bring bedding (eg sleeping bag, pillow). We will be in touch about the arrangements for this following registration
  • Team options - Two cyclist teams, at either a 27km/hr or 20km/hr pace, or driver/navigator, or ground support crew

  • Day 2: Waitomo Caves to New Plymouth (183km)
  • Day 3: New Plymouth to Whanganui (161km)
  • Day 4: Whanganui to Masterton (170km)
  • Day 5: Masterton to Blenheim (rest day / travel)
  • Day 6: Blenheim to Murchison (166km)
  • Day 7: Murchison to Hanmer Springs (175km)
  • Day 8: Hanmer Springs to Christchurch (145km)
  • Day 9: Celebration breakfast and event wrap-up (mid morning)

Fundraising

We are raising funds to support the work of the education program at Eagles Wings focussing on primary and secondary students - either through one-off donations or through new on-going monthly supporters.  

Our target is to raise $50,000 towards the education program and 25 new on-going supporters.  With enough hands raised in support, this target is very achievable!  Our fundraising website will be up and running shortly, but don't let this stop you from fundraising now, with your registration you will receive details to help you raise this much needed funds for Zambia.

Cost and Registration

Registration fees are as follows, inclusive of a one-way airfare from the East Coast of Australia to Auckland. Participants are responsible for organizing their own way home after the event on Monday 9th December:

  • Cyclist AUD$1750
  • Support crew AUD$1050
  • Children AUD$850
  • Costs for NZ based participants are $300 less than these amounts, but do not include the cost of travel to Auckland which is the responsibility of these participants.

Required payment dates:

  • Deposit: at time of registration $100
  • 50% payment - 1 August 2019 (to confirm arrangements with airlines and accommodation)
  • 100% payment - 15 October 2019

Payment adjustments:

  • two discount opportunities are available for each event participant. If you raise $4,000 in donations for Eagles Wings we will discount your entry fee by 50%. Secondly if you bring a new cyclist to the event (that is someone who has never before joined us on one of our events), we will offer you a $150 discount. If applicable these discounts are offered as refunds on your full payment
  • you may elect not to include the supporter's polo or hoodie in your fee if you already have the apparel from a recent event, please advise this is the case in your registration form
  • you may wish to purchase additional cyclist kits (your registration includes 1 kit which will be washed at the completion of each day by our support team), tickets to send-off dinner etc, more will be communicated in regards to this after registration.

Waterfall Wander 2019

Kondalilla falls

Ever wanted to join a Challenge for Change event but you're not a bike rider? Following up from last years successful Brisbane Valley Walking Challenge we are launching our second walking challenge. Come and join us as we walk to Change the Lives of vulnerable children in Zambia.

The Event

This year we will walk the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk – starting at Lake Baroon, past Kondalilla and Mapleton Falls to the Gheerulla Recreation area, and back to Lake Baroon – about 80km over 6 days. The walk includes a lake, a gorge, mountains, rainforest, spectacular lookouts, and 4 waterfalls. It will be amazing. There will be some easy flat walking but each day will also include some steep uphill and downhill sections. Come and join us as we challenge ourselves to change the lives of vulnerable children in Zambia. We are looking for walkers and support crew to help with transporting and feeding us.

  • Event dates -  Sunday 7 July – Friday 12 July
  • Accommodation - will be at the same place for whole trip with transport to and from walking points each day. We will stay in shared apartments with wood-fired heating and all bedding supplied. Places are limited so book soon to make sure you don’t miss out.

Fundraising

We are focussing our fundraising efforts in three ways. With your registration you will receive details to help you raise these much-needed funds for Zambia.

  • To raise $10,000 towards the Ukufuma program that supports Eagles Wings students to pursue further education and training after finishing school.
  • To raise $10,000 towards the education program focussing on primary and secondary students.
  • To find 10 new on-going supporters.

Cost and Registration

Registration fees are as follows

  • Walker AUD $700
  • Support AUD$580

Participants are responsible for travel to and from the event start and finish at Baroon Pocket Dam. The registration fee includes accommodation, meals and transport from accommodation to walk start points and return each day. Challenge for Change shirts or hoodies will be extra.
